CHVRCHES Debuts New 'Love Is Dead' Music During Album Release Party

CHVRCHES

CHVRCHES is set to release their brand new album, Love Is Dead, on May 25th, but the band celebrated a few days early by performing some of their new music live during their intimate iHeartRadio Album Release Party in New York City.

Love Is Dead is CHVRCHES' third full-length studio album, and follows the band's 2015 LP, Every Open Eye. The band's new album features their new single "Get Out," as well as other previously-released songs like "My Enemy" (featuring The National's Matt Berninger), "Never Say Die," and "Miracle." Co-produced by Greg KurstinLove Is Dead is the first album to not be independently produced. The group also collaborated with Eurythmics' Dave Stewart.

During their iHeartRadio Album Release Party, CHVRCHES debuted some of their new music off their new album for the first time, including songs like "God's Plan," "Graffiti," and "Forever," as well as performed previously released songs like "Get Out," "Miracle," and "Never Say Die." The band also performed fan favorites from their previous two albums.

CHVRCHES front woman Lauren Mayberry also opened up about the making of the album, including what it was like working Matt Berninger and Dave Stewart during a special Q&A portion of the show. Find out what Lauren had to say below.

On working with The Nationals' Matt Berninger on "My Enemy":

"We met the guys from The National a few summers ago at festivals. And we were all huge fans of the band anyway. So we played some shows with them and then we kept in touch with Matt because of a project he did here for Planned Parenthood. So, we did that and then when we had the demo it was the three of us that produced 'My Enemy' and we had the demo and we just kept thinking about Matt and the way his voice works and how that would fit on the song. And we emailed, and he said okay, and he recorded it in his house the next day."

On working with Eurythmics' Dave Stewart:

"He is a legend. I think that we can all agree on that. We didn't even think that he would return our phone calls, let alone try and write some songs with us. But the songs didn't make the record just cause we did that so early in the process. By the time we finished they just didn't feel like they were in the same zone. But he's so cool, and we've spent a lot of time with him since. And he's just so curious about music and creating, and he's not jaded at all. He just really still has a fire in him, and I think that's really inspiring."

On having a live drummer instead of a drum machine:

"Well, I guess technically Jonny [Scott]'s on the first record for any people who are really eagle-eyed and read the inlays. Jonny played drums on the songs that had live drums on the first record, and I don't know. We were talking about that when we made Love Is Dead. There was a lot of live recording on it, but we didn't think it would work with the drum machine anymore. And I think it's fun to develop a live show. We did two albums worth of the similar kind of vibe."

On filming the "Miracle" music video:

"I felt really bad that this like really nice stunt lady was like, 'hit me, hit me in the face,' and I'm like I really don't want to do that. But then when I was doing it so far past her head, that they were like, 'no that doesn't look like you're doing it at all.' So, in the end, she just ducked out of the way of my really feeble punch. So, she was professional, I was not."
